FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Academic counsellors can be a valuable resource for navigating
in a program, knowing what is available, and what is required of you,
and knowing how each program or course has to do with your preferred
career. A student coach is a partner and a buddy. As in sports, a coach
helps you win, using 3 main elements: inspiration, incentive and technique.
Personal therapy, to be effective, requires deep exploration into your
family history, childhood trauma, neuroses, fears and schemas.
It usually requires an extended commitment and regular sessions, and
focuses on healing and personal awareness. Coaching focuses on
success in specific situations and goals, and requires no commitment
or regularity to be effective.
You will gain a valuable edge when you discuss all your assignments
with your professor, T.A. or supervisor. They offer subject matter
expertise, can explain exactly what is required for any assignment,
and can zero in on details. They can also engage in stimulating dialogue
when they have the time. But they may not inspire you, will seldom
offer you a wider or more creative perspective, will not train you in
technique, and will not provide personal support in real time.
Questions are the main tool of a student coach. Be prepared to turn
your assumptions topsy-turvy and discover resources you never knew
you had. Be prepared to break old habits and apply new techniques.
Expect intelligent, engaging dialogue. Most of all, expect active and
enthusiastic support.
Here’s a typical misconception that drags people down rather than
empowering them. You do not have to do anything alone. Where did
that idea come from? Two heads are better than one. Starting now,
take advantage of the multiple rewards from colluding and collaborating.
Very good question. Whether you are taking fine arts, architecture,
engineering, optometry or microbiology, part of what you will learn in
a coaching session is how to articulate what you know. My job is to
ask you questions to bring you clarity, and train you to ask more
probing questions yourself.
Second, my experience in diverse disciplines of study as well as
numerous business sectors has exposed me to countless different
bodies of discourse and equipped me to converse intelligently
about virtually anything.
Third, it is actually a valuable asset in your favour that I did NOT
specialize in your discipline. It allows both of us to take a step
back and survey your specific assignment with fresh eyes and
a wider perspective.
